EN533 Flame-Retardant Protective Clothing Material Specification Report


1. ​Standard Overview

EN533:1997 is the core European standard for flame-retardant performance in protective clothing. It specifies requirements for ​limited flame spread in materials and material assemblies when exposed to small ignition sources. This standard applies to scenarios without significant heat hazards and must be combined with other standards (e.g., EN531) for high-heat risk environments.


2. ​Key Performance Classification

Materials and assemblies are classified into three tiers after ​EN532 testing:

3. ​Durability Testing Requirements

Note: Metallized materials and leather are exempt. Final classification is based on the lowest performance level before/after cleaning.


4. ​Material and Assembly Specifications

· Single-layer materials: Index 1 materials must be combined with Index 2/3 materials.

· Multi-layer assemblies:

Outer layer testing: Flame applied to the outer surface; must meet Index 2/3.

Optional inner layer testing:

1. Flame applied to inner and outer surfaces; entire assembly must meet Index 2/3.

2. All inner layers must independently comply with Index 2/3.


5. ​Labeling and Certification Requirements

· Mandatory labeling: EN533:1997 + Performance Class (Index) + Durability Code (X/R).

· Warning for Index 1: Must include "Not for direct skin contact."

· Example label: EN533 Index 3-X indicates compliance with the highest flame-retardant level after dry/industrial washing.


6. ​Testing Methodology (EN532)

· Sample size: 6 specimens per group (200 mm x 160 mm).

· Flame conditions: Vertical exposure to methane flame (40 mm height) for 10 seconds.

· Criteria:

Flame spread failure: Flame tip exceeds 150 mm from the edge.

Hole formation: Melting, burning, or charring creates ≥5x5 mm gaps.

Size range: S-XXL (Chest: 84–124 cm; Height: 158–194 cm).

Color codes: White (CNDCWO), Blue (CNDCBO), Red (CNDCRO), customizable for bulk orders.

§ USA/Eurasia: ANSI Z89.1 helmets and ANSI Z87 goggles accepted, but flame retardancy remains EN533-based.

10. ​Appendix: EN533 Test Data

· Typical Index 3 values:

o Afterflame time: ≤1 second (pre/post cleaning).

o Hole formation: 0/6 specimens defective.

o Breathability: ≥50 l/m²/s (EN ISO 9237).

· Durability cycles:

o Code X: 5 dry-cleaning cycles or 50 industrial washes.

o Code R: 5 water-soaking cycles (24 hours each).
